In the regular season, Baldwinsville's wrestling team managed to hang on to its CNY Counties League National division throne, despite the vigorous challenge from Cicero-North Syracuse.
But when the two sides clashed again at CNS in Saturday's Section III Class AA championship meet, the Bees had to settle for second place, amassing 210.5 points - just behind the host Northstars, who won with 229 points.
Still, B'ville won four of the five finals it entered, starting at 96 pounds, where freshman Kevin Paul fought his way to an 8-4 decision over CNS's Drew Dyer in the title match.
At 112 pounds, another ninth-grader, Chad McArdell, made his way to the finals, then methodically handled Fayetteville-Manlius opponent Pat Quinlan in an 11-0 shutout. At 145 pounds, Antonio Peck's fine season continued, as the senior held off F-M's Ryan Kiggins 5-4 in another closely-fought final.
Junior Pat Nasoni, who had provided so many dramatic and important victories during the season (including the last-second pin of CNS's Ariel Anoceto in their Jan. 28 encounter), emerged as the 189-pound champion when, in the title match, he pinned Liverpool's Joe Pizzuto with 22 seconds left.
Only at 103 pounds, where sophomore Tim Sposato dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to CNS's Dan Ciciarelli, did the Bees lose in the last round. But it still qualified a large number of wrestlers for this Saturday's Section III Division I championships at Utica Auditorium, which start at 9 a.m.
