ESM, Grimes basketball keeps perfect marks

Spartans top Fulton; girls Cobras hold off Hannibal

— None of this drama could be found back home, where the Grimes boys team eased its way to 5-0 by again applying its racehorse tempo in the first half against an overwhelmed Hannibal side.

By the time they reached the break, the Cobras led 42-16, and could afford to relax. Jon Carnegie worked inside for 21 points, while Casey Evans earned all of his 12 points from a quartet of 3-pointers. Gai Ater managed 10 points and freshman Connor Evans contributed seven points.

At ESM, the boys Spartans made sure it did not disappoint in the wake of its confidence-building 57-47 win over CBA back on Tuesday night, jumping all over a 1-2 Fulton side.

Big production in the first quarter led to a 25-14 edge, and though it cooled off in the second period, the Spartans also clamped down on the defensive end, the margin growing to 36-21 by the break.

Every time the Red Raiders tried to get closer, ESM had an answer. Keith Caiello sank five 3-pointers to account for most of his 23 points, while Bobby Campese notched 12 points and Brandon Russell contributed 10 points. Casey Sullivan (nine points) and Sean Richardson (eight points) nearly hit double figures, too.
