CBA wins twice, improves to 4-2

Making a big comeback, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls volleyball team erased a 2-0 deficit and beat local rival East Syracuse- Minoa in five sets on Thursday night.

The Spartans appeared to be in control after winning the first set 25-16 and pulling out the second set 26-24. But once the Red Rams claimed the third set 25-21, it took control, dominating the fourth and fifth sets and winning by 25-9 and 25-16 margins.

Taylor Bierwagen led the rally as she got 10 aces to go with her nine kills. Jenna Hayward also had nine kills, plus three aces, three blocks and three digs, while Carly Neugebauer had 10 kills. Laura Wildridge had five kills and four blocks. Sonia Narsipur earned 25 assists.

ESM, without an injured Danielle Steigerwald, saw Kaitlyn Shaughnessy put together 21 assists, six aces and three kills. Amanda Canorro had 10 kills, while Rachel Aird and Safira Lubenovic each got five kills and Aird added five aces. Olivia Chopskie had seven digs, four kills and three aces, with Melissa Azzolino contributing four aces.

Prior to this, ESM had spilt two matches, first beating Onondaga in four sets. After surviving the first set 26-24, the Spartans lost the second set 25-21, but turned around and ripped the Tigers 25-21 in the third set and prevailed 25-21 in the fourth set.

Shaughnessy picked up 28 assists, helping a deep front line. Steigerwald had seven kills, while Chopskie and Lubenovic earned six kills apiece. Aird had five kills as Azzolino served up five aces. Noelle Downey had three kills and four assists.

A night later, ESM lost to Mexico 25-12, 25-17, 25-20, in a match where Steigerwald went to the sidelines early with an injury. Shaughnessy still had 13 assists, while Aird had five aces, four kills and three digs. Morgan Sokolic had three kills and Mackenzie Gabriel added seven digs.
