Manlius Aminy I. Audi, president and CEO of L. & J.G. Stickley, Inc. of Manlius, was recently honored with the 2011 Legacy Award, an honor bestowed to a woman who has made significant lifetime contributions to the home and furnishings industries. The award was presented during WithIt’s annual educational conference, held Aug. 23 to 25 in Raleigh, N.C.
“They say that it is a common history that bonds a community, and that the telling and retelling of the shared history is part of the glue that keeps a community together,” Audi said. “And so it is with WithIt and Stickley and the many parallels we share in providing a caring, safe and ever-changing community for those who lead and others who follow. We value and encourage diversity of opinion and life experiences. We value women and men who demonstrate integrity and courage as they use their leadership to create positive change. We especially value people who, as they go forward, remember to give back.”
In accepting the award, Audi acknowledged her late husband and business partner, Alfred.
“[Alfred’s] love and passion for our industry led us to Stickley,” Audi said. “I was fortunate enough to share the dream and the very exciting journey of revitalizing Stickley and propelling it into the highly esteemed company it is today.”
In 1974, the Audis purchased an ailing Stickley Furniture company that had fewer than 25 employees and annual sales under $250,000. Now in its 11th year as a manufacturer of premium solid wood furniture as well as fine upholstery, the company has a workforce of nearly 1,500. In 1989, the Audis successfully reissued the historic Mission collection, originally made popular by Gustav and Leopold Stickley, and made Stickley a household name once again.
