This concern should go beyond Spafford town residents who, in increasing numbers, are beginning to ask this question. Onondaga County residents who drink water and take baths and showers might also start asking this question.
However uncertain, but nevertheless possible, water contaminated with HVHF chemicals cannot be filtered out, either from Skaneateles Lake which water is unfiltered, or from Otisco Lake, which water is filtered. If contaminated, water from both lakes would be equally undrinkable. Really, is it worth the risk not to ban hydrofracking?
The lakes, water and watershed may be situated in the Town of Spafford, but the quality of guardianship will affect the entire county. The question deserves an answer not only from Spafford residents, but also from Onondaga County residents.
The quality of guardianship depends on 4 people on the Spafford Town Board — whether and how they see the value of zoning out “heavy industrial activity.”
What goes on in Spafford stays in Spafford. Or, does it?
