Vote for Shepard in county primary

— As a public servant for 37 years, in various capacities, I believe I have a good idea of the attributes that the public is seeking in their county legislator. We are very fortunate to have a candidate of the caliber of Derek Shepard.

Four years ago, the Van Buren Republican committee tapped Derek to run for a town councilor position. We could see the potential that Derek held and he has not disappointed us. I have no doubts regarding his experience and abilities to perform the legislator job with success.

Derek has been a part of streamlining and cutting government costs in Van Buren the past four years. He understands that government must work for the people. He understands that when government attempts to expand beyond that of necessity, he will be there to put the brakes on.

I want to convey to you Derek shows wisdom and discernment beyond those far his senior. This has been demonstrated by the two executive director positions Derek has held, both which included responsibility for multi-million dollar budgets. He is a SU graduate and is currently a juris doctor candidate in May 2012 with a 3.7 GPA.

Derek expects a sense of accountability from himself and from others. He will represent all of the 13th district. No one will feel like an orphan. Derek is committed to being accessible. He plans to schedule attendance at town board and committee meetings to keep a constant check on the pulse of his district. Your problems will be his problems.

Derek has demonstrated he has the education and experience; that he will work hard to get elected and, most of all, that he has the passion to do the job and fulfill the needs and expectations of his entire district.

I respectfully ask you join me in supporting Derek Shepard for the District 13 County Legislature seat with your vote on Sept. 13. You won’t be disappointed.

Claude Sykes is the town of Van Buren Supervisor.
