Even with its deep and talented group of runners, the West Genesee boys track and field team could not quite keep up with Cicero-North Syracuse, taking a 79-62 defeat to the Northstars in last Wednesday's meet at Wildcat Stadium.
Billy Gabriel tore through the 3,200-meter run in nine minutes, 46.8 seconds, but could not pull off the double in the mile, finishing second in 4:26.9 as CNS's Chris Buchanan won in 4:23.7.
John DeLallo tore to victory in the 800-meter run in 1:57.7 and teamed with Matt Byrnes, Matt Gonnella and Ethan Osborne to dominate the 4x800 relay in 8:25.5. In the 4x400 relay, DeLallo won again, this time with Peter Richardson, Anthony Terzolo and Luke Potash as they posted 3:50.3.
Elsewhere, Richardson needed 1:03.1 to beat the field in the 400-meter hurdles, while Matt Ulrich held off CNS's Kareem Lee, 16.4 seconds to 16.5, to win the 110-meter high hurdles.
Where the Northstars built its winning margin was in field events, where it won five of six events. Only Sean Howard proved an exception, going 31 feet 8 inches in the triple jump, while Matt Romano tied Mike Hyde in the pole vault, each clearing 10 feet.
Up at Bragman Stadium, The West Genesee girls team had a far more difficult time with CNS, falling to the Northstars 102-39.
Yet even there Laura Leff provided a highlight, the freshman needing 5:20.9 to win the 1,500-meter run and later speeding to first place in the 800 in 2:24.4. Kelly Powell was first in the 400-meter dash (1:04.1) and teamed with Leff, Alyssa Zeman and Allison Iles to take the 4x400 relay in 4:27.3.
Westhill had mixed success in its OHSL Liberty division opener, splitting on the girls side as it beat CBA 89-45 but lost to Skaneateles 102-39. Jessica Curry did beat the field in the 3,000 with a time of 10:49.5.
Meanwhile, the boys Warriors lost to both Skaneateles 74-67 and CBA 87-53, despite Corey Wilkinson pulling the double as he threw the discus 113 feet and tossed the shot put 38 feet 3 inches. Also, Matt Trendowski won the 400-meter dash in 53.8 seconds and Casey Bunce won the 3,200 in 10:39 flat.
