Arrests made in DeWitt robbery, assault case

A 23-year-old white male was attacked early morning April 7 by a group of eight to 10 suspects at an apartment complex in DeWitt.

The DeWitt Police Department has made two arrests so far.

Gaetano L. Colozzi, 21, of Syracuse, was arrested April 7 for robbery in the second degree and assault in the second degree. A search warrant at Colozzi's residence resulted in additional drug charges - two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree. Colozzi is scheduled to appear at 5 p.m. Tuesday April 12 at the DeWitt Town Court.

William D. Jackson, 30, of Syracuse, was arrested for robbery in the second degree and assault in the second degree. Jackson turned himself in to investigators April 8.

Augustus Allen, of Syracuse, was a passenger in a car driven by his friend whose name has not yet been released. Allen was under the impression that he and his friend were going to the apartment complex to visit a mutual acquaintance, said Lt. Scott Hare of the DeWitt Police Department.

When he stepped out of the car driven to the rear parking lot of 26 Caton Drive, the suspects approached him from behind another nearby car. They then knocked him to the ground, beat and robbed him, police said. After the attack, Allen went to a nearby apartment for help where the resident called 911. The victim was transported to SUNY Upstate Hospital and treated for a broken nose, numerous contusions, lacerations and abrasions.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call 449-3640 or email tips to tips@townofDewitt.com.
