One suspect in custody, another identified in early morning assault in DeWitt

A 23-year-old white male was attacked early morning April 7 by a group of eight to 10 black suspects at an apartment complex in DeWitt. One individual is in custody and at least one other person has been identified in the investigation.

Augustus Allen, of Syracuse, was a passenger in a car driven by his friend whose name has not yet been released. Allen was under the impression that he and his friend were going to the apartment complex to visit a mutual acquaintance, said Lt. Scott Hare of the DeWitt Police Department. When he stepped out of the car, which was driven to the rear parking lot of 26 Caton Drive, the suspects approached him from behind another nearby car. They then knocked him to the ground, assaulted him and stole personal belongings, police said. After the attack, Allen went to a nearby apartment for help where the resident called 911. The victim was transported to SUNY Upstate Hospital and treated for a broken nose, numerous contusions, lacerations and abrasions.

The investigation is ongoing; no names are being released at this time.
