In the course of three weeks, the Skaneateles girls basketball team would play six consecutive road games, five of them against OHSL Liberty division opponents. At least the first of them turned out well, as the Lakers went to Hannibal Friday night and gave new head coach Jill Blasi her first win at the helm, beating the Warriors 56-47. Hannibal’s profile had increased with the presence of exchange student Karolina Severova, and she had a solid first outing, earning a team-high 13 points, plus 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Still, Skaneateles had moved in front with its full-court pressure that led to all kinds of Warrior turnovers. As a result, the Lakers were up 36-27 through three periods, and it was able to match all of Hannibal’s late production. Outside, Elizabeth Lane put up a game-high 16 points, hitting on a trio of 3-pointers, while Joanna Dobrovsky supplied the inside balance and earned 15 points. Jackie Leslie contributed eight points, twice hitting 3-pointers, while Britney Welch and Mary Buck hit important free throws. That long road swing started last Tuesday night with a non-league game at Cortland, where the Lakers were on the brink of a breakthrough before Maggie Brown, almost by herself, delivered the Purple Tigers past Skaneateles 68-59 in overtime. Strong from the start, Skaneateles worked its way to a 13-8 lead through one period. Over the course of the game’s middle stages, the Lakers answered every Cortland run, maintaining that modest margin. Early in the fourth quarter, though, Skaneateles saw that lead vanish as Brown pushed the Purple Tigers ahead. But the Lakers staged its own comeback, doing enough to tie it, 54-54, and send it to a four-minute OT period. Brown really took over here, though, with both field goals and lots of late free throws. Overall, the senior had 34 points, from 11 field goals and 12 successful foul shots, adding 20 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. Lane led Skaneateles with 21 points, hitting on three 3-pointers. Dobrovsky had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Leslie contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Emily Call had seven points. At 1-2 following the win at Hannibal, Skaneateles would visit defending Class B champion Cazenovia at a refurbished Buckley Gym Tuesday before going to Marcellus Friday night.
