A series of top individual efforts helped the Skaneateles boys track and field team rise to fourth place in the Section III Class B-1 championship Friday at Marcellus High School. When it was all done, the Lakers had 63 points, right in the middle of the seven-team field. Holland Patent, with 203 points, ran away with the team championship. Sean Cooper would prevail in a 110 high hurdles nail-biter. Both Cooper and HP’s Ben Neal crossed the line in 15.71 seconds, but upon closer examination Cooper had finished in 15.702 to Neal’s 15.705 and, by that tiny margin, won the race. Cooper also was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 23.96 seconds. Tim Lewis would prevail in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches with fewer misses than South Jefferson’s Louis Kendall, and got second place in the long jump with 19 feet 2 inches. Lewis also was eighth in the 100-meter dash and, with Cooper, Nico Petrocci and Max Weiss, earned fifth in the 4×100 relay in 47.78 seconds. Taylor Weyneth earned third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.65 and took sixth (11 feet) in the pole vault, while Sam Kriever ran 800 meters in 2:05.21 to get fourth place. Patrick Biver, in the triple jump, took fourth place with 37 feet 8 inches. Chris Wise had a strong showing in the pentathlon, taking third place with 2,139 points. Nick Smolenski, Nate Schwab, J.J. Gregg and Dan Wolfanger rose to third in the 4×400 relay in 3:43.23. A day earlier, tough competition awaited the Skaneateles girls track team as it made the short trip to Marcellus for its Class B-1 meet. Still, the Lakers managed to earn 59 points, sliding into fifth place, though it was far from the totals of Cazenovia, who won with 152 points, and Holland Patent, who was second with 137 points. Caroline Walton resumed her battle with Hannibal’s Mary Lenhart in throwing events – and split them. Walton won the discus with a heave of 91 feet 4 inches to Lenhart’s 90 feet 3 inches, and took second in the shot put with 35 feet 5 inches as Lenhart (36 feet 8 inches) won there. Kaela Fiutak won the pole vault, the only competitor to clear 9 feet, as she also got sixth in the long jump with 15 feet 1 3/4 inches. Kelly Dunn was sixth in the high jump (4 feet 6 inches) as Anna Goodell got sixth in the pentathlon with 1,774 points. In the 4×400, Erin Tonzi, Taylor Woodruff, Anna Barnett and Aine Rooney were third in 4:20.14. Tonzi, Madeline Adams, Julia Poorman and Danielle Mazzeo got to fourth in the 4×800 in 10:08.34 as Fiutak, Amelia O’Hara, Molly McCarthy and Nikki Cole were fourth in the 4×100 in 54.57 seconds. Adams, on her own, was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:15.92, while Tonzi got fourth in the 800 in 2:34.23. Woodruff was fourth in the 400 sprint in 1:02.30 as Rooney was seventh and Barnett eighth. McCarthy was sixth in the 200 and eighth in the 100. Virginia Hamlin earned sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:36.34) and Abby Rathgeb got seventh in the 3,000-meter run.
