Toughened up by the great competition it faced in the OHSL Liberty division, the Christian Brothers Academy track and field teams both roared to the top spot in their respective Section III Class B-2 championship meets, both held at Marcellus. It started Thursday with the girls meet. Overall, the Brothers had 147 points, only getting a real challenge from Lowville, who was second with 122 points as Ilion (96.2 points) was third. Betty Etheredge won plenty of those points by herself. Etheredge claimed the 100-meter dash in 13.20 seconds, while Monica Perrone was fifth, and unleashed a top triple jump of 35 feet 2 inches. She nearly got the triple jump, too, taking second in 16 feet 2 1/2 inches, just 3/4 of an inch behind Lowville’ Taylor Haenlin. CBA went 1-2-3 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, where Maire Kate McGlynn won in 8:40.12, ahead of Gabriel Schugg in second (8:44.40) and Michaela Gildemeyer (9:02.61) in third. On her own, Gildemeyer would win the 400-meter dash in 1:02.99. Rachel Zajdel, who took fourth in the 400, won the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.34, with McGlynn (5:25.09) in third. Megan Pierce was second in the 3,000-meter run (11:58.94), and Schugg was third in the 800-meter run in 2:38.18, where McGlynn was fifth. Ashley Crouch joined in by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 17.36 seconds, and also joined Etheredge, Perrone and Olivia Lore as CBA edged Lowville, 52.39 seconds to 52.60, to win the 4×100 relay. Perrone also got fourth in the 200-meter dash. Michaela Gildemeyer, Maire Kate McGlynn, Gabriel Schugg and Rachel Zajdel were second in the 4×800 relay in 10:52.05. Marisa Hamel was second in the pentathlon with 1,936 points, while Megan Hyla (1,242 points) was fourth. A day later, the CBA boys went to Marcellus and, with 160 points, earned its own B-2 crown ahead of Ilion, who was second with 130.5 points. No other team reached triple figures. Brendan Smith charged through the distance races. He won the mile in 4:37.76 and, in the 3,200-meter run, finished in 10:36.49 to win there, too, as David Carey was third (10:52.28) and Jack Lenkiewicz third. To cap off his triple, in the 3,000 steeplechase Smith won again in 10:24.38. Lenkiewicz was fourth in that event and sixth in the mile as the Brothers, in 9:05.97, got second to Ilion in the 4×800. Just as important was CBA’s sprint sweep. Emmanuel Collins beat Deshawn Salter, 11.10 seconds to 11.46, in the 100, with the same thing happening in the 200 as Collins (22.81 seconds) and Salter (23.35 seconds) again went 1-2. Kevin Frasor joined in by winning the 400-meter dash in 52.64 seconds, beating, among others, Jared Sayles (53.04 seconds) in third place. Frasor then joined Collins, Salter and Nate Fornal to blaze to a 4×100 title in 44.47 seconds. Dan Predmore rose to the top in the discus with a heave of 134 feet 9 inches, more than three feet ahead of Ilion’s Zach Ames. Sayles rose to second in the long jump, going 19 feet 4 inches. CBA also was third in the 4×400 relay in 3:39.74 as Jack Brower, Andrew DePerro, Ben Capella and Kevin Frasor took part. Brower, on his own, took second in the 800 in 2:05.18, while Will Brower got third (17.02 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles and fifth in the high jump. Nick Spunar was fifth in the pentathlon.
