Two of Baldwinsville top boys tennis teams doubles combinations would make the finals in their respective divisions at last week’s Section III Class A tournament at Syracuse University’s SkyTop Courts – and one of them would prevail. Slotted into third doubles, Alec Funicello and Grady Schmidt made it through the early rounds before a semifinal where they swept past Matt Carberry and Kevin Franceschelli (Auburn) 6-1, 6-3. This led to Tuesday’s final, where Funicello and Schmidt would need just two sets to beat the Fayetteville-Manlius duo of Sam Badalian and Alex Martin 6-3, 7-6. Tom Hamm and Dan Kot reached the championship match in first doubles by beating West Genesee’s tandem of Andrew Albert and Brett Smith 6-0, 6-2. However, that magic disappeared in the final as East Syracuse-Minoa’s duo of Parker Stone and Brandon Stone beat them 6-1, 7-6.’ Funicello, Schmidt, Kot and Hamm all advanced to the state qualifying tournament at Utica Parkway Courts, where the top three finishers would earn tickets to the state championships at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens.
