Name the discipline – sprint, distance race, field event, relay, endurance test – and chances are the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team had someone ready to win during Wednesday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Bragman Stadium. And that ability to do a lot of things well led to the Northstars cruising to an easy victory in the team portion of the sectional meet, earning 119.5 points. That was nearly double the total of Utica Proctor, who edged past Liverpool, 66 points to 64.5 points, for second place. Ryan Connor handled the sprint part. In the 100-meter dash final, Connor and West Genesee’s Ryan Howard nearly hit the line at the same time, but Connor prevailed, 11.09 seconds to Howard’s 11.10. Not content with that, Connor also helped in the relay part of CNS’s winning formula as he, along with Andrew Johnson, Mark Broughton and Avery Share, tore through the 4×100 relay in 43.63 seconds, with Proctor second in 43.91 seconds. For distance running, Chris Buchanan made sure that all the attention didn’t go to Liverpool star Zavon Watkins, as he pulled away from the field in the 3,200-meter run, winning in 9:39.50, more than 10 seconds better than Nick Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius), as the Northstars’ Neil Gill was third in 10:00.84. More memorable, though, was the duel between Watkins and Buchanan in the mile. Both of them pulled just in front of West Genesee’s Billy Gabriel and went down the stretch before, in a time of 4:14.58, Watkins edged Buchanan by 0.13 seconds. A much more lopsided 800-meter run saw Watkins, in his specialty, tear to victory in 1:52.48, leaving behind, among others, CNS’s Jared Walther, who was third in 2:00.33. Watkins also tied for fifth in the high jump and, with Anthony Ostuni, Brandon Rudd and Alex Christensen, earned second place in the 4×800 relay in 8:18.38, not far from Baldwinsville, who won in 8:15.58. Walther helped CNS take fifth place in 8:42.01. Quiet in most of the field events, CNS went 1-2 in the pole vault, where Mike Hyde won by clearing 13 feet and Cameron Shaughnessy, with a clearance of 12 feet 6 inches, eased into second place as Tate LaPort (10 feet) was third. All through this meet, the five-event pentathlon took place – and CNS’s Joel Brousseau easily claimed the title, earning 2,674 points to finish well clear of Liverpool’s Brandon Horton, who was second with 2,198 points. Kareem Lee challenged for the 110 high hurdles title before settling for second place in 15.02 seconds. Lee also had a sixth-place long jump of 19 feet 10 1/4 inches. Anthony Lupia claimed second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:07.96, with teammate Ken Ryan fourth in 10:27.35. Sam Nassar rose to third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.96 seconds, while Cameron Doray was fourth (45 feet 6 1/2 inches) in the shot put. In the 4×400 relay, Liverpool’s quartet of Keewan Rondinello, Kameron Arnold, Steve Fiorello and Julian Anjorin were second in 3:29.06, with CNS right behind them with a clocking of 3:33.18 for third place. On his own, Arnold earned third place in the 400-meter dash in 51.06 seconds, just ahead of Rondinello (51.24 seconds), who also was fifth in the 400 hurdles (59.34 seconds). Justin McGriff took fourth in the triple jump, going 42 feet 2 1/2 inches, and was fifth in the 110 high hurdles. The Warriors’ Jackson O’Connor was sixth (123 feet) in the discus. Everyone returns to CNS next Thursday for the state qualifying meet.
