If it’s late May, then it’s time for the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team to make another push toward another Section III Class C championship. Now the no. 2 seed Lakers are two wins from repeating its title from 2010, as in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal it systematically took apart no. 7 seed Westhill in all phases of the game and eliminated the Warriors 15-3. Going into the game, Westhill had a reason to feel optimistic because, when it had hosted Skaneateles exactly one week earlier, it had put up a good fight and only allowed the Lakers to escape with an 11-7 winning margin. However, Skaneateles had a fresh memory of that battle, too, and resolved not to let it get too interesting in the rematch that carried far higher stakes once the Warriors had eliminated South Jeffferson 14-8 in last Friday’s opening round. A solid first quarter saw the Lakers give up the first goal, but turn around to close the period on a 4-0 run. Then, with its defense in top form, Skaneateles blanked Westhill in the second period as four straight goals made it an 8-1 margin going into the break. And the domination continued throughout the second half, too, as the Lakers saw nine different players score before it was done. Kevin Rice was the main instigator, piling up five assists to go with his pair of goals. Mike Richards led with three goals as Paul O’Donnell, Zach Brownlee and Jeff Higman each found the net twice. Ryan Farrell, Connor O’Hara, Alex Brownlee and Nate Scuderi took turns getting single goals. In Thursday’s Class C semifinal at Christian Brothers Academy’s Alibrandi Stadium, the Lakers (16-1) meet no. 3 seed Cortland, who held off CBA 11-10 in its quarterfinal. The winner of this game goes to Cicero-North Syracuse for Saturday’s 3 p.m. final against Cazenovia or Homer.
