At just the right moments, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team likes to unleash its full roster of talented distance runners to leave the rest of the field far behind. Such was the case in Tuesday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, where the Hornets earned all kinds of sweeps, claimed a pair of relays and didn’t stop until it had the team title in its collective grasp. F-M finished with 150 points, with host CNS settling into second place with 106 points and no one else in triple figures. More than half those points were earned in races 400 meters or longer. That included the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, both 1-2-3 sweeps worth 48 total points. In the 800, Katie Brislin nudged past teammates Katie Sischo and Courtney Chapman, winning in 2:19.35 to Sischo’s 2:19.39 and Chapman’s 2:19.68. Moving to the 1,500, it was Jillian Fanning’s turn to win, hitting the line in 4:36.76 as Chapman got second (4:37.14) and Sischo was third in 4:42.51. Heather Martin needed just 58.08 seconds to cover 400 meters, with Natalie Zazzara settling into second place in 1:01.30 and Kelly Muller in sixth. Up in the 3,000, Chapman got a victory in 10:09.56, comfortably ahead of Fanning, who was second in 10:13.45, while Alana Pearl worked her way to victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:35.50 as Maggie Malone (7:51 flat) was fourth. F-M also went to the top in the 4×800 relay, where Fanning, Chapman, Sischo and Brisling needed just 9:25.08 to cover the two miles, with everybody else 10 minutes or slower. The 4×400 saw Martin, Zazzara, Muller and Sischo get to the line in 4:06.30, more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Baldwinsville. The Hornets were strong in the other sprints, too. Molly Levy was a close second (12.89 seconds) to B’ville’ Gabrielle Jordan (12.81) in the 100-meter dash, with Martin third in 12.93 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Zazzara was third in 27.50 seconds as Martin took fifth. Isabelle Carapella got fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and helped the Hornets run to fifth in the 4×100 relay. In field events, Muller cleared 7 feet 6 inches for fifth place in the pole vault. Jhoville Pommells had a sixth-place shot put toss of 30 feet 8 inches as Jessica Puro was sixth in the pentathlon with 1,870 points. A day later, in the boys Class AA championship meet, F-M finished seventh with 47 points, far off CNS’s winning total of 119.5 points. Austin Perez led the Hornets’ efforts. In the 200-meter dash final, Perez sped to victory in 22.30 seconds, well clear of Utica Proctor’s Chris Simmons (22.64 seconds) at the line. Nick Ryan worked his way to second place in the 3,200-meter run in 9:50.33, with Bryce Millar fourth (10:03.10) and Ben Thomas fifth in 10:09.09. Ryan would also get fourth place in the mile in 4:20.68, just ahead of Mark McGurrin (4:21.31) in fifth. Owen Strong stepped in to take third place in the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in 10:14.59, while Langston Lightcap got fourth place in the 800 in 2:00.59. Lightcap, McGurrin, Andrew Veilleux and Eric Billingson were third in the 4×800 in 8:27.97, but a uniform violation kept the Hornets from competing in the 4×800.
