Even a few weeks ago, the notion that the Baldwinsville boys lacrosse team would make any noise in the Section III Class A playoffs was a strange one. Just making the post-season was enough of a task. All that has changed, though. Once reeling well below the .500 mark, the Bees are now rolling, as it showed Tuesday night by going to Corcoran and knocking off the no. 4 seed Cougars 13-12 in the opening round of the Class A playoffs. These two sides had first met back on April 8, a one-sided affair where B’ville took a 20-8 defeat. Yet the Cougars, despite going 12-4 in the regular season, never made significant improvement – at least when compared with the Bees’ surge in May that included four wins in its last five regular-season games. In terms of energy level, B’ville, the no. 5 seed, had it from the moment the game faced off. Pushing the tempo right at Corcoran’s defense, it converted often and raced to a 6-2 lead, and that start proved to be the difference. From that point forward, the Cougars were trying to catch up. Slowly, it age into B’ville’s margin, but every time it wanted to catch up, the Bees managed an answer and, at the end, held on, Casey Colligan’s goal with 10:39 left proving to be the game-winner – even if it was the Bees’ lone tally in the fourth quarter. Joe Delia and Billy Rumble combined for career-best performances, as Delia earned seven assists, his passes often going to Rumble, who earned six goals, nearly half his team’s total. Casey Colligan finished with a three-goal hat trick, while Pat Colligan, Nick Ciampi and Steve Petrelli joined Delia with one goal apiece and Ben Paprocki added an assist. B’ville’s much-improved defense also had strong moments against Corcoran’s potent attack as each of Parker Ferrigan’s 14 saves proved important. On Thursday, the Bees go to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium and confront top seed and nine-time defending champion West Genesee in the Class A semifinals. The winner gets Liverpool or Fayetteville-Manlius in Saturday night’s final, also at CNS. WG beat the Bees 15-2 in their only regular-season meeting and romped past CNS 19-2 in its opening-round playoff game. As this goes on, B’ville’s girls lacrosse team, with its no. 2 seed, takes on no. 3 seed Liverpool (who took out Central Square 11-3) in its Class A semifinal at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium. Whoever wins here goes to Liverpool to meet West Genesee or F-M for the sectional championship.
