Just down the road from home, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field team prevailed again in Thursday’s Onondaga High School League Freedom division championship, held at East Syracuse-Minoa Stadium.
The Red Rams earned 177 points, well clear of runner-up Homer, who had 106 points. The host ESM Spartans did well, too, claiming fourth place with 65 points.
At the basis of J-D’s win was a sweep of the relays. The Rams claimed the 4×100 (52.06 seconds), 4×400 (4:17.25) and 4×800 (10:23.80) events with contributions from Ally Fox, Kayla Fulmer, Taylor-Rae Danforth, Sierra Vasiliou, Katy Pieri, Liz Pieri, Danielle Rebecca Doss, Hannah Stefl, Samantha Clemons and Paige Morrow. ESM got third in the 4×100 and fourth in the 4×800.
On her own, Vasiliou would win the shot put, tossing it 31 feet 8 1/2 inches, and notched second (16 feet 1/4 inch) in the long jump behind Phoenix star Ashley Palmer (16 feet 3 3/4 inches), where Fox was fifth. ESM’s Charlotte Visser was fifth in the shot put. Vasiliou added a fourth in the 100-meter dash.
Danielle Doss would win the pole vault by clearing 8 feet 3 inches, while Katy Pieri was sixth. Maggie Fuller settled for third in the high jump (5 feet) with fewer misses than ESM’s Nina Zesky in second place.
ESM had its best moment in the 3,000-meter run, where Gabby Pallotta beat the field with a time of 11:02.92 as J-D’s Ameena Dye (11:16.36) was second and Laura Wengert was sixth. Dye also got second in the 1,500-meter run in 5:08.61, with Wengert fourth.
In the 400-meter dash, Liz Pieri got to second place in 1:01.42, with Katy Pieri (1:04.17) fourth. Fox got to third in both the 100 (13.11 seconds) and 200-meter dash in 27.56 seconds, beating Liz Pieri (27.84) in the latter event.
Stefl landed in second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:20.51, with Clemons fourth and ESM’s Paige Courbat between them in third place. Rebecca Doss was third in the 800-meter run (2:34.25), edging out Morrow (2:34.77) in fourth, while Courtney Ellis got third (1:13.39) in the 400-meter hurdles.
J-D also had Noelle Novakowski, with 1,765 points, and McKenzie Kallquist, with 1,486 points, finish second and fourth, respectively, in the pentathlon, where ESM’s Kim Donato was sixth. Tangela Hightower was third in the discus (82 feet 5 inches), with Brooke DeRoberts fifth.
ESM’s Carly Eaton was third in the triple jump, going 31 feet 6 inches as teammate Amanda Wall (31 feet 2 1/2 inches) was fourth. Heather Hiltbrand was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.85 seconds, ahead of Danforth and Ellis. Wall rose to third in the long jump with 15 feet 7 1/4 inches and got fifth place in the 200.
