Activity for all of the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa lacrosse teams got cut off a bit by all the wet weather early in the week. For the boys Red Rams, basking in the afterglow of its 5-3 conquest of West Genesee on April 23, the rest was welcome as it went five days before returning to the field. When it did play again, though, little changed as the Rams, no. 1 in the state Class B rankings, easily extended its win streak to 32 games, first by handling Chittenango 17-1 on Friday, then by taking out Cortland 13-3 on Saturday. Against the Bears, it was 13-1 by halftime as Deke Burns earned four goals and two assists. Tim Edwards, McLaren Brady and Adam Goss each found the net twice as Jordan Evans picked up four assists. The stars basically carried J-D against Cortland, as a tight game broke open when the Rams notched eight unanswered goals in the second quarter to take an 11-1 lead. Through it all, Evans, with four goals and five assists, and Burns, who poured in six goals, proved unstoppable, as Alex Hatem scored twice and Edwards contributed one goal and one assist. J-D’s defense remained stellar, too, blanking the Purple Tigers until the fourth quarter, when the starters were on the bench. ESM’s girls lacrosse side remains unbeaten, at 8-0, though it got quite a scare from Chittenango Friday night before holding off the Spartans 11-10. All through the game, the Bears, paced by Jenna Barber (four goals, one assist), kept up with ESM, but the Spartans held on at the wire behind Marlee Vlassis and Nikki DeVona, who both matched Barber with four goals of their own. Alayna Davis scored twice and Sam Dooling got the other goal as each of Katie Cook’s nine saves proved important. It proved easier in Saturday’s 14-5 win over Homer, where the Spartans bolted out to a 10-3 halftime edge. Davis scored a season-best five goals, matching the Trojans by herself as Vlassis added three goals and two assists. Nikki DeVona had two goals and three assists, with Alex McEachron adding one goal and one assist. Haley DeVona also had a goal. As for the ESM boys, it moved back above .500 (5-4, to be exact) last Thursday with an 11-5 win over Whitesboro where, once again, Garrett Smith took over. Only up 4-2 at halftime, the Spartans used a 5-1 burst through the third quarter to pull away. And Smith, by himself, outscored the entire Warrior roster with seven goals as Sean Dooling, Bobby Campese, Jesse Perry and Dan MacDougall each added single goals. Two days later, ESM handled Fulton 10-3, nearly pitching a first-half shutout in racing to a 5-1 lead. Smith again outscored the opposition with five goals, while Campese scored twice. Dooling had a goal and two assists as Nick Capriotti and Dean Squires also converted. Emile Frigon added two assists as Alex Krawec was superb in the net, recording 13 saves. Back on Thursday, J-D’s girls team improved to 7-3, defeating Cortland 10-8 to make a move up the OHSL Freedom division standings. The Red Rams seized a 6-4 lead by halftime and held on the rest of the way, never letting the Purple Tigers’ attack get too well established. Taylor Bierwagen nearly won the game by herself, managing six goals plus an assist as Taylor Fallon added three goals and two assists. Caitlin Cariseo had the other goal, as she and Lauren Swan got two assists apiece. Lauren Beville had one assist as Marie Prosak recorded nine saves.
