For a full week, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team stewed over its 5-4 loss to Liverpool on April 21, but once that was over the winning quickly resumed. The Hornets returned last Thursday, hosting Nottingham, and toyed with the Bulldogs in a 17-2 romp, gaining an 11-2 lead by halftime and not allowing anything the rest of the way. Kevin Lux, with four goals, led a well-balanced attack as Ari Waffle and Ryan Simmons put up three goals apiece. Joe DeSantis scored twice, with Jim Krizman, Sawyer Dew, Derek Andrake, Chris Anklin and Dave Hajduk taking turns getting singles goals. In a much tougher assignment Saturday afternoon, F-M hosted Baldwinsville and, again, saw an opponent tried to slow things down – but it didn’t work as the Hornets beat the Bees 9-6. Another rough start left F-M down 2-1 going into the second quarter. It didn’t stay that way, though, as Waffle led a 5-2 surge through the second period that put the hosts ahead for good. The Bees kept it close, but could not answer the Hornets’ timely outburst. Waffle finished with four goals and one assist. Krizman put up a goal and two assists as Lux, Simmons, Andrake and Dew got the other goals. Stefan Basile made a big difference, too, stopping 17 of the 23 shots he faced. In contrast to this, the F-M girls lacrosse team, in search of a big win against a Class A contender, could not quite pull it off in a 15-12 loss to Baldwinsville at Ray Middle School. Much of the game was a lively exchange between the Hornets and Bees. It turned out that the difference was B’ville notching a 9-6 halftime lead, for F-M would match them the rest of the way, but not catch up. Mollie Caputo, in defeat, notched five goals, with Alex Murphy adding four goals and one assist. Katie Sipple had a goal and two assists as Marri Ryu and Cara Esposito also converted. Marilyn Farrell earned two assists. Before going to B’ville, the Hornets first withstood last Thursday’s wind-swept trip to Oswego, doing enough to record a 14-11 win over the Buccaneers to briefly rise back to the .500 mark. All through the first half, the two sides flourished on the attack. But F-M did a bit better, leading 10-6 at the break, and it nursed that margin through the late stages while improving its defense. Sipple had four goals and three assists, with Caputo matching that four-goal total and adding a pair of assists. Farrell got two goals and three assists, while Ryu and Cara Esposito had their own two-goal outings. Each of the F-M teams will be favored this week in games against Central Square and Auburn.
