With a busy stretch ahead of them during the April school break, the West Genesee baseball and softball teams both wanted to go in displaying a winning form. On the baseball side, the Wildcats hosted defending Section III Class AA champion Auburn Thursday afternoon, nine days after their first scheduled contest at Falcon Park got snowed out. Though it was still cold, it remained dry – and WG, thanks to pitcher Matt Naton, kept the Maroons’ bats thirsty, too, leading his side to a 6-1 victory. The 6-4 right-hander surrendered a run in the third inning, but otherwise was quite effective, holding Auburn to two hits and two walks while striking out four. Despite a pair of errors, the Wildcats also provided ample defensive backup for Naton. Still, the Wildcats trailed until the bottom of the fifth, when it solved Auburn pitcher Matt Colella and got four runs to move ahead for good. A two-run sixth inning would follow. Six different players – Naton, Eric Spencer, Sean Pisik, Cam Kyle, Matt Grecco and Matt Petrick – drove in those six runs as Mike Sgroi scored twice. Two days earlier, WG played its first road game of the season at Henninger and saw the bats warm up in a 13-1 romp over the Black Knights. WG batted around in the top of the second, scoring six runs, and didn’t need anything more as Spencer earned eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Brian Burns and John Fredette split the relief duties. At the plate, Naton led the way with three hits and three RBIs, scoring twice. Burns also had three RBIs as he, Grecco, Sgroi and Erik Krohl each matched Naton by scoring a pair of runs. Sgroi drove in two runs as Petrick, Kyle and Greg Wadach added RBIs of their own. In softball action, WG rolled past Henninger 7-0 last Tuesday afternoon, scoring all of its runs in the first four innings. Trish Andrews doubled twice and scored a pair of runs. Gabby Rivers finished with three RBIs as Ashley D’Avirro also drove in a run. Meanwhile, pitcher Kaleigh Churchill sparkled in her varsity debut, tossing a two-hit shutout that included seven strikeouts and no walks allowed.
