Still undefeated, the Canastota softball team unleashed all kinds of offense in the course of a pair of Center State Conference wins – then kept on going with a sweep of Saturday’s windy, wet Mudville Tournament. The Raiders did get off to a rough start in last Monday’s game against Waterville, but still smashed the Indians 14-5. Canastota was down 3-0 after two innings, but surged ahead with five runs in the top of the fourth. Waterville tied it, 5-5, in the fifth, but the Raiders batted around in the sixth, not stopping until it had amassed seven runs and moved in front for good. Jessica Patterelli supplied the biggest blow, a grand slam on her way to three hits and five RBIs. Lindsay McGinley added a three-run home run as Ally Bernier also had three hits and Emily Harp tripled. The Raiders amassed 16 hits in the rain-shortened affair. Only a rainout – as what happened to Wednesday’s scheduled game against Sauquoit Valley – could slow the Raiders down, as on Friday it returned to play and increased its production in a 20-4 blowout of Mount Markham. A three-run first inning set the tone as five runs followed in the second and Canastota led 11-0 after three innings. Still not satisfied, the Raiders used an eight-run sixth innings to cap off its effort. Harp, in particular, was hot as she had five of Canastota’s 18 hits, earning a pair of RBIs. McGinley tripled twice, finished with three hits and drove in five runs, while Patterelli had three hits and three RBIs. Alexis Havens, Jessie Boswell and Valerie Baer drove in two runs apiece. Kelsey Lawrence, Samantha McCarthy and Ashley Hammes drove in runs, too. Not stopping there, Canastota went to the Mudville event on Saturday and ignored the difficult conditions to get two more wins of varying difficulty. It included a 3-0 victory over Mayfield where the Raiders had just one rally, in the bottom of the second. Harp’s double scored two runs, and that was all Patterelli needed as she pitched a two-hit shutout. Havens had three stolen bases and Samantha McCarthy added two stolen bases. By contrast, Canastota flattened Gloversville 14-3 with its bats, amassing 22 hits and scoring at least once in each of the first six innings. Patterelli’s totals included two doubles and two triples. Harp also tripled as Ally Bernier picked up three RBIs. Patterelli, McGinley and Samantha McCarthy each drove in two runs, while Havens, Lawrence and Alexis McCarthy had one RBI apiece. Hamilton unloaded on Poland 16-1 last Monday afternoon, most of the damage coming in the sixth and seventh innings, when the Emerald Knights erupted for 11 runs. That included Jordan Peterson’s home run as she went three-for-five with five RBIs. Rebecca Rogers also drove in five runs, complementing her one-hit pitching that included 12 strikeouts. Katie Weeks pounded out a pair of triples. On Wednesday, rain postponed the Emerald Knights’ game with rival Morrisville-Eaton – who had just taken a 12-1 defeat to New York Mills. Danielle Clements took the loss, unable to stop Marauders star Carly Dziekan, who had a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. M-E also lost Friday to Oriskany.
