For the second time in three days, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team came agonizingly close to pulling off a huge surprise for its first win of the season. Just as the Lakers had put a scare into Christian Brothers Academy on April 7, it did the same to Skaneateles two days later at the Fenner Street complex, nearly forcing overtime before the other Lakers held on for an 11-10 win. True, Cazenovia went into the game 0-3 – but it had already faced Skaneateles, losing to them 19-5 on April 2. The fact that, in the span of a week, the rematch would prove so close was astonishing all by itself. Whatever Skaneateles did in the first half, Cazenovia nearly matched it, only trailing 7-5 at the break. Then, led by Kaitlyn Button’s production, the hosts moved closer in the second half, but could not quite catch up. Button, overall, had three goals and five assists, with Gabby Jaquith also finding the net three times. Hillary Bullock earned two goals, with Kristina Kleine and Rebecca Wheeler also converting. Lauren Devine made 11 saves. Skaneateles saw Dianne Vitkus and Erin Callahan each notch three goals. So when the Lakers take on Westhill and Cortland next week at the Fenner Street complex, it will still be searching for its first wins of the season.
