There will be no undefeated regular season for the Bishop Ludden baseball team this time around. In just its second outing of 2011, the Gaelic Knights ran into trouble early in last Thursday’s game against East Syracuse-Minoa, leading to an 8-3 loss to the Spartans. James Murray started for Ludden, but did not last long. ESM tagged him for two runs in the top of the second inning and chased him from the mound with a five-run third. From the fourth inning onward, relievers Ryan O’Kane and Corey Hunter shut out the Spartans, but Ludden hitters could not solve ESM pitchers Joe Greco, Steve Brownell and Jeremy Fletcher, who combined to limit the potent Gaelic Knights to four hits. Chris Davis and Ciro Frontale each had one RBI as, for the Spartans, Casey Sullivan led with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. As this went on, Marcellus won its season opener over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 8-2, while Jordan-Elbridge fell to Weedsport 2-1 in eight innings. Usually a power in the Tri-Valley League, the Red Devils led, 2-0, before the Mustangs got on the board with a run in the fifth. Then, in the top of the sixth, a three-run rally pushed Marcellus in front, and it tacked on four more runs in the seventh for lots of insurance. Tim Schneider got the win, going five-plus innings without allowing a walk. As for J-E, it got a run in the first inning, Leland Holmes racing home on Nick Berwind’s single. With Leland Holmes’ pitching, the Eagles kept Weedsport off the board until the fourth, when the Warriors tied it. In his seven innings of work, Holmes amassed 15 strikeouts, walking just three. It stayed 1-1 until the eighth, when the Warriors got the winning run off Holmes’ relief replacement, Nick Berwind, as Dave Chirco drove home Tucker Beardsley for the second time in the game.
