A long day of competition for the Baldwinsville boys bowling team in Saturday’s Section III boys bowling championships at Strike-N-Spare Lanes in Mattydale was over – and then it wasn’t. Remarkably, the Bees and Auburn were in a dead heat atop the Class A team standings with a pinfall of 5,548. Three games of individual morning competition, and 15 games in the “Baker” format (five-man teams rolling one game) during the afternoon, had decided nothing. So a one-game roll-off was required to determine Class A honors – and B’ville won it, leaving the Maroons in second place. In the overall team standings, B’ville and Auburn both ended up behind Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, the Class B champions, who improved from last year’s second-place showing to win with 5,699 as Utica-Notre Dame was second, 72 pins behind the Red Devils. The Bees actually trailed Utica Proctor after the morning session as tough conditions at Strike-N-Spare prevented any individual from scoring higher than a 254 game (by Fulton’s Dan Wahl) or a series better than 674 (by VVS’s Brad Long). But B’ville overtook the Raiders in the Baker session as Auburn kept up, right to the last pin.
