The Jordan-Elbridge and Marcellus wrestling teams both found their way to Hannibal on Saturday for Saturday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot division championship meet. By the time it was done, the Eagles J-E would rise to fourth place with 113 points as the Mustangs got 93 points for ninth place. Hannibal, on its home mat, finished on top with 236 points. J-E’s Mitch Alpha joined Tully’s Dave Brown as the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers. On his way to the 112-pound title, Alpha handled all his challengers, culminating in the final where he beat Cazenovia’s Nick Petroff 7-1. Alpha’s teammate, Collin Ennulat, lost the 135-pound title match to Hannibal’s Alex Race 12-8, while Eric Gross got to the 135-pound final before another Hannibal wrestler, Austin Woodworth, pinned him. Mitch Cooper, at 140 pounds, and Derrick Cheney, at 160 pounds, both had third-place finishes, as Cooper beat Cazenovia’s Teddy Kugler 3-0 in the consolation bracket final and Cheney dominated Fabius-Pompey’s Guthrie Cordone 16-4 for that same spot. Joe Mills was fourth at 130 pounds. Marcellus had two winners, including Zach Ruggles, who made his way to the 96-pound final and, in a rematch with Skaneateles’ Josh Brill (whom he beat earlier in the week), won again, this time 8-1. Also, Matt Dempsey found his way to the 145-pound championship, edging Onondaga’s Zak Field 4-2 for the title. John Carvaretta was third at 215 pound as he shut out Conor Rourke (Skaneateles) 16-0 in a technical fall. Marcellus goes to Oneida this Saturday for the Section III Class B championships, while J-E takes part in the Class C championships at Lowville. Top performers advance to the overall sectional finals Feb. 13 at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
