A new local rivalry took hold on Friday night as the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt wrestling team met Fayetteville-Manlius – and the combined side came out on top, beating the Hornets 52-36. The first four matches were split. CBA/J-D saw Ben Honis, at 135 pounds, pinned Colin Tynan in 3:50 and Aaron Benedict (145 pounds) pull out a 9-0 victory over Ryan Kiggins. F-M countered with Tom Quinlan, at 140 pounds, pinning Zach Hatem in 38 seconds and Jon Hajduk (152 pounds) finishing off Stuart Fiaco midway through the second period. When Tyler Neveldine, at 160 pounds, pinned Paul D’Antonio in 1:55, the Hornets led 18-9. But CBA/J-D took the lead for good with three straight wins. Brad VanPatten, at 171 pounds, pinned Augie Pavone in 3:47 and Zach Shapiro (189 pounds) got a last-second pin of Jordan Kalil before Corey Plumleg, at 215 pounds, claimed a forfeit. Though F-M’s Sam Wells (285 pounds) also claimed a forfeit, CBA/J-D benefited from Brad VanPatten (96 pounds) and Arsen Bagiryan (103 pounds) earning forfeits as it went ahead 39-24 with four matches left. The Hornets’ Pat Quinlan kept his side alive at 112 pounds by pinning Max Haven in 1:10, but Matt Lauro clinched the CBA/J-D win at 119 when Jacob Norton had to stop due to injury. Josh Scalzetti (125 pounds) pinned Colin Brady in 1:59, but J.T. Romagnoli closed it out for CBA/J-D at 130 pounds with a 50-second fall over Jordan Nelipowitz. This came nearly a week after CBA/J-D finished 12th in an 18-team field at the Jack Fisher Memorial in Newark on Jan. 23. Romagnoli won the 130-pound title, beating Chris Giancursio (Penfield) 5-2, while Benedict, in the 140-pound final, got injured against Mitch James (Port Byron) and had to default. East Syracuse-Minoa lost Thursday to newly-crowned Section III Dual Meet champion Fulton 68-9. Jon Britton actually won the 215-pound opener, pinning Jason Crandall in 1:45, but the Red Raiders won every other match except 140, where Steve Loder beat Devon Viscome 5-1.
