Best-selling author Tim Green visited Driver Middle School (DMS) on Sept. 17 and presented an inspirational assembly that emphasized the power of books and reading. Green is the acclaimed author of novels and chapter books for both adults and children. Among his best-selling books for kids are "The Big Time", "Rivals," "Football Champ," "Baseball Great," "Football Hero" and "Football Genius."
A Renaissance man at heart, Green had an All-American football career at Syracuse University before playing in the NFL for eight years. He has experienced career success as both a lawyer and a TV broadcaster. Green is currently the head football coach at Skaneateles High School.
"I have spoken to 254 groups of children and I am going to talk to you today about the importance of books and reading," Green said. Green spoke of his own personal experiences with writing as he emphasized that "kids who read books get smarter in school .... Books build character as you take on the character qualities of the heroes in the stories."
The assembly presentation was filled with personal stories from his days as an NFL football player and shared experiences from his family life and writing adventures. Green shared his four keys to success which included:
1. Identify your talents
2. Do the work to actualize your talents
4. Build your character
The presentation came to a close with questions from curious students about his multi-layered career, and one that had to be on the minds of everyone in the room: "What are the chances that your Skaneateles football team will beat Marcellus next Friday night?"
