Girls soccer Warriors edge F-M in overtime

In a three-day span, the Liverpool girls soccer team would quickly accelerate from quiet activity and sporadic games to heated action against two other Class AA title contenders.

And the Warriors passed the first of those tests Wednesday night on its new turf field, controlling the flow of play against unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius - though it still needed overtime to beat the Hornets 2-1.

F-M came to Liverpool with a 4-0 mark that included an impressive tournament win at Jamesville-DeWitt during Labor Day weekend. With a potent attack and lots of athleticism, the Warriors appeared to have a big test in front of them.

Yet from the time it started, the Warriors, more comfortable on an artifical surface, attacked hard, getting a handful of prime scoring chances in the first 20 minutes, but unable to get a shot past Hornets goalie Nina Quigley.

When F-M finally got a reasonable chance, on a free kick midway through the first half, Brenna Kincaid powered it 35 yards into the net, beyond the reach of Liverpool keeper Tori Corsaro.

Though down 1-0, the Warriors didn't stay there, equalizing six minutes later when Kim Murphy poked in a shot, the assist going to Kayla Szczesniak.

And there it stayed for a long time, through a scoreless second half and one 10-minute overtime period. Liverpool had most of the opportunities to pull in front, but it just could not convert, even seeing a Murphy header go off the post in the second half.

All that pressure would pay off in the middle part of the second OT, as, amid a crowd of players in front of the F-M net, Courtney Szczesniak stuck the ball past Quigley into the right side of the net for the game-winner.

Liverpool would not get any time to gloat, as on Friday it visits Baldwinsville for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Bees are 3-0, and have not allowed a goal in any of their victories so far.
