Skaneateles soccer teams spilt openers

Just before Labor Day weekend, both of the Skaneateles varsity soccer teams took to the field for the first time in 2010, with varying results.

On the boys side, the Lakers gave every intention of contending for league and sectional honors, going to Homer Friday afternoon and bashing the Trojans 5-0.

As this was going on, the Skaneateles girls team went to Westhill and was close all the way through before taking a 2-1 loss to the Warriors.

The boys Lakers were Section III Class B champions in 2008, then returned to the finals a year later before falling to long-time rival Marcellus 2-1.

Hungry again to get to the top, Skaneateles brings back a solid returning cast this fall, and it wasted little time taking charge against Homer.

A.J. Richichi, who played this summer in the Empire State Games, paced a Laker attack that controlled possession all afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead by halftime, then stretching it out further as it took 23 shots to Homer's three.

All told, Richichi had two goals and two assists. In support, Kevin Rice had one goal and one assist as Adam Miles and Austin Amory also converted. Jeff Higman, Mike Richards and Spencer Parker added assists.

A much closer contest unfolded at Westhill, where the Skaneateles girls team fell behind 1-0, then got on the board in the second half as Carly Davis posted an unassisted goal.

Still, the Warriors would prevail thanks to goals by Brenna Rainone and Molly Kiggins, negating the nine saves posted by Laker goalie Mary Buck.

The girls Lakers play Thursday at long-time rival Marcellus, a day after the Skaneateles boys team plays at Cazenovia.
