DeWitt officer involved in morning accident

DeWitt Police are investigating an accident that took place this morning involving a DeWitt patrol car and another vehicle on a Route 481 South offramp.

Officer Jeffrey MacDonald, 45, was seated in his patrol car parked on the off ramp to the NYSDOT area from Route 481southbound, with his emergency lights activated. He was investigating an accident where a van struck a deer. Both vehicles were off the left side of the roadway.

Erin Gustke, 19, of Mattydale, was driving southbound on Route 481 in the left hand lane when she saw the police lights and attempted to slow down on the wet roads. Gustke lost control of her car, spinning 180 degrees then struck MacDonald's patrol vehicle. MacDonald was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The van from the original accident was not involved.

Gustke said she was not injured and refused treatment. She was issued a traffic ticket for driving faster than she should have been due to the wet road conditions.
