Liverpool: Memorial Day in the Butterfly Garden

HOPE for Bereaved, Inc. to host observance May 31

The HOPE for Bereaved, Inc. will be hosting a Memorial Day ceremony to remember those who have died recently and long ago, as well as those who have died will serving their country.

The organization's office, located at 4500 Onondaga Blvd in Syracuse, holds the mission of helping people cope with grief that occurs with a loss of a loved one.

Therese Schoeneck, HOPE founder and executive director, invites community members to attend and hear the words of local clergy and dignitaries at noon Monday May 31 at the Butterfly Garden off Onondaga Lake Parkway.

Spirit of Syracuse Chorale Group will perform a song for the ceremony.

Because the Butterfly Garden has many memorial bricks purchased by people across the region, Schoeneck said there is likely to be many people from all walks of like who will be at Monday's service.

"It's very powerful and peaceful," Schoeneck said.

The event is in its 19th year and has become tradition for many. Attending the event as she does year after year, Schoeneck said she will attend the ceremony and then grab a hotdog at Heid's with her daughter and other loved ones.

Parking at the garden will be more accessible as a parking area has been designated thanks to a recent Liverpool Rotary project.

Schoeneck said she wanted to thank HOPE member Jim Keib who reached out to the rotary after sharing the need for the sign.

The Green Thumb in Lafayette has also donated flowers to the garden for years, a business that Schoeneck said has been a solid support to the purpose.
