J-D girls track roar to sectional A-1 title

The same sort of one-sided nature that pervaded throughout the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field team's undefeated stampede in the OHSL Freedom division still lingers on.

No one could come close to the Red Rams in Thursday's Section III Class A-1 championship meet at Chittenango. J-D accumulated 235.33 points, with the "closest" pursuer, Whitesboro, way back in second place with 80.33 points.

At times in field events, J-D didn't have any competition, as in the discus, where Olivia Costa worked alone, and the shot put, where Costa, Marae Tearney (the winner with 34 feet 4 1/2 inches) and Sierra Vasilliou had the only points.

Everywhere else, there was some opposition, but J-D still smothered it, as in the triple jump, where Natalie Mannion won (33 feet 6 inches) and Amanda Tan (31 feet 9 inches) was second.

Mannion also won the long jump, going 16 feet 1/2 inch to beat Vasiliou (15 feet 7 inches) and the rest of the field. And in the five-event pentathlon, Danielle Doss finished on top with 2,166 points, with Noelle Novakowski (1,535 points) in third place.

J-D also swept the three relay events. The winning 4x100 (51.54 seconds), 4x400 (4:14.36) and 4x800 (10:20.23) quartets included Tan, Tearney, Mannion, Linsay Royer, Katy Pieri, Liz Pieri, Eileen Cody, Rebecca Doss, Ameena Dye and Shelby Weinstein.

Individually, Hannah Stefl won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:57.81, later taking third (5:23.03) in the 1,500-meter run as Amber Blom took fourth.

Also in distance races, Cody claimed the victory in the 3,000-meter run in 11:11.36, while Dye (11:25.49) ran to third place. Rebecca Doss took fourth in the 800-meter run.

Courtney Ellis earned a victory in the 400-meter hurdles, edging Whitesboro's Mary Pastorelli, 1:10.55 to 1:10.81, while also getting third in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.70 seconds) as Taylor-Rae Danforth was fourth.
