The Skaneateles Town Board will hold a public hearing at 7:15 p.m. Thursday June 17 at Town Hall.
The hearing is in regard to Introductory Local Law 2010-B known as "A Local Law Amending The Cold War Veterans Tax Exemption Local Law of the Town of Skaneateles."
According to Supervisor Terri Roney, Onondaga County has amended the exemptions for Cold War veterans.
The proposed introductory local law states that the state recently adopted amendments to the New York Real Property Tax Law in relation to Cold War veterans exemptions. The amendments permit localities "to enact a local law increasing the maximum exemptions allowable pursuant to said section up to certain levels."
On the recommendation of town assessor Ronald Miller, if the town is to approve Local Law 2010-B, exemptions would include 15 percent of assessed value not to exceed $36,000.
According to the board's resolution, those who have received a compensation rating because of a service connected disability may receive an exemption in the amount determined by multiplying 50 percent of the disability rating by the assessed property value. The exemption is not to exceed $120,000.
Veterans currently receiving the Alternate or Eligible Fund Veteran Exemption are not eligible for this exemption.
The town board approved the introductory local law and set the public hearing for June 17.
