C-NS Chamber Orchestra wins gold at state

The Cicero-North Syracuse High School Chamber Orchestra, directed by Robert J. Connell, once again has won the Gold Award on the highest level of state competition, at the New York State School Music Association Majors Competition held at Westhill High School on April 15.

The orchestra performed a program that included Arcangelo Corelli's, "Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1," Gustav Mahler's "Adagietto" from "Symphony No. 5," and the first movement from "Serenade for Strings, Op. 22," by Antonin Dvorak. Concertato Soloists on the Concerto Grosso were Lindsey O'Laughlin, Violin I, Shelby Dems, Violoin II and Hallie Dems, Cello.

High praise was given to the "superbly matched soloists." The judges were extremely complimentary of the outstanding orchestra, awarding very high scores in nearly every category of competition. Judges comments included: "musically expressive ensemble; excellent balance and blend; great expression; lovely sounding group; and terrific musicians."

Plan now to attend the C-NS High School Orchestra Spring Concert at 7 p.m., Thursday May 27 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 259 E. Onondaga St., at Columbus Circle.

Also, the Northstar Strings Pops Ensemble and C-NS High School String Quartet can be heard performing at the Civic Center in downtown Syracuse, for prelude music, from 7 to 7:55 p.m. Saturday May 15 for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's Concert.
