Recognizing student achievement
Teachers recognize student effort, achievement and study skills by nominating students for the weekly Excellence Team. Every week each teacher nominates a student from her class to eat lunch with Principal Frey on Friday afternoon. Students feast on pizza donated by Pizza Hut on Route 57. The PTA provides milk and paper products for the lunch. Kindergarten students are nominated by their teachers to read a story with Mr. Frey.
The school honors fourth-grade and fifth-grade students each quarter with study skills awards. Students receive the award for consistently doing homework, demonstrating a cooperative attitude, diligently completing class work, and demonstrating consistent effort, among other criteria.
Special student programs
Palmer held its second annual Science Fair this spring. Co-chairs for this event were Amy Davis and Jeanne Morelli. Students had the opportunity to use the scientific method in creating their projects and explained them to other students during the day and to their parents and visitors at a special evening reception.
As part of its school-wide wellness focus, Palmer instituted the Jump Rope Fitness Club. The club met every Wednesday for most of the year and students participated in a variety of fitness activities. The program was led by parent Trista Holden-Betts and supported by several other parents and staff members. Each Friday, Palmer's School Nurse, Kathy Spensieri, also shared a Wellness Message of the Week, focusing on some aspect of wellness including nutrition, disease prevention, fitness, etc.
The Palmer calendar is packed with activities as the school year winds down including:
Presidential Academic Awards
Rainbow Assembly (show highlighting student talents)
Palmer Annual Olympics
Muffins for Moms
Donuts for Dads
Fifth-grade Moving Up Celebration
These are just a few of the many activities that help every Palmer student grow academically, socially, and physically throughout the school year.
