Manlius FD seeks volunteers

Find out what it's like to be a volunteer for the Manlius Fire Department.

The department is reaching out to community residents this month, with hopes to recruit at least 20 new members.

"Having the opportunity to impact somebody is really special," said four-year member Adam Feck, chair of the recruitment committee. "But actually doing it is even more."

This Saturday, Fire Station 2 will be open for public tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Another open house will take place Monday May 31 at Fire Station 1 on Stickley Drive following the Memorial Day parade.

Interested parties can talk to existing members and learn about various open positions.

"There's really something for everyone," Feck said, listing several areas where volunteers are most needed. The department would like to recruit about five to eight more people in each category, which include firefighting, scene support, emergency medical services and fire police.

Currently, the Manlius Fire Department has more than 65 volunteers and 12 paid career firefighters. Check out its website, manliusfire.com or become a fan on Facebook at facebook.com/manliusfire.

"We're a proud group," Feck said. "We take a lot of pride in what we do."
