Skaneateles: SMG offers fashion for funds during annual spring event

The Skaneateles Music Guild is tasked with giving children a chance to experience music at its finest.

Recently the guild helped fun trips for the school's orchestra to travel to Los Angeles and for the band to go to Williamsburg. The guild also helps purchase instruments, give scholarships and helps with music lessons.

Above all that, the organization also exposes ever child to a professional performance by Syracuse Symphony Orchestra musicians.

While the focus is always on the kids in Skaneateles Central School District's music program, once a year the guild steps outside the box and offers a spring fundraiser mixed in with lunch and a fashion show.

"This event is the first fun time people can don their spring duds and see each other after the long winter," said board member Patti Carey. "All money goes to support music education in our schools."

The annual luncheon, held Wednesday May 5 at the Skaneateles Country Club, was attended by more than 200 people, who were graced by the talents of the Skaneateles Middle School Jazz Ensemble led by Dave Wilber.

Wilber thanked the guild for all it has done for the music program, including helping to purchase equipment the students were using for the midday concert.

"We are so very lucky to be able to provide diversity to our programs," said board member Emily Gregg.

While the students played, those attending the event mingled, visited and placed their bids on approximately 90 items.

According to Carey, the number of auction items was reduced this year in an attempt to present quality merchandise. Items ranged from gift certificates for local merchants to donations from the Skaneateles Festival.

The fashion show portion of the event brought the latest in apparel from local shops including Roland's, 5 on Jordan, Cate and Sally, Funky Fashion Boutique, Echo Off The Lake, The Country Ewe and Skaneateles 300. Each store's model's either were employees of the shop, school administrators or Skaneateles' own music teachers.

Anyone interested in making a donation to the Skaneateles Music Guild to continue supporting music education may send checks made out to Skaneateles Music Guild, Inc., to Skaneateles Music Guild, PO Box 279, Skaneateles NY 13152.
