DeWitt Police arrest suspected purse thief

DeWitt Police have made an arrest after a suspect stole a purse and led police on a chase that ended in the city of Syracuse.

Charles A. Blasco, 41, of 6094 Bethlehem Lane in Cicero, was arrested and charged with two counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree, resisting arrest, unlawfully fleeing police, reckless driving and several other traffic violations. He was held on $25,000 cash/$50,000 bond bail and is scheduled to appear in the DeWitt Town Court on March 11.

DeWitt Police responded to a call that a purse had been stolen around 1 p.m. March 6 inside Sears at Shoppingtown Mall. Surveillance video showed that a white male operating a purple GMC Jimmy had taken the purse. Officer Chase Bilodeau located the SUV on Erie Boulevard East and Bridge Street and attempted to stop him however, Blasco refused and fled from DeWitt to the city of Syracuse, where Bilodeau was then assisted by other DeWitt, East Syracuse and Syracuse City police officers.

Blasco lost control while attempting a turn and struck a tree. After a brief foot chase and struggle, Blasco was taken into custody and transported to Crouse Hospital, where he was treated and released for injuries sustained in the crash.

A female passenger in the SUV fled the scene and was not apprehended. She has not been identified at this time.

Property from at least three additional victims was located in the vehicle and more charges are pending.

No photo has been released due to additional investigation and identifications to be made.
