Officials in Lysander will submit a request to the Department of Transportation for a speed zone and signage study on River Road, north of Route 31. Residents voiced their concern that the road's many bends and blind spots, combined with a high speed limit, make it a dangerous area for bikers, pedestrians and other drivers. There have been four accidents in the last year, as well as numerous close calls.
Originally, the study was to extend north to Melvin Drive, near Fairways North. However, several River Road inhabitants said the problem of excessive speed originates farther north, with drivers coming from the Phoenix direction failing to reduce their speed upon entering the residential area beginning around Greenleafe Drive. It was suggested that the study include these areas as well. The town board then extended the area to be studied to First Street in Phoenix.
