Poetry/Spoken Word for Peace in Syracuse

The Syracuse Peace Council's June monthly program will feature Poetry and Spoken Word for Peace on Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Thornden Park Amphitheater.

In addition to an open mike period, the Council is honored to have two featured poets. Jack Brown is the lyricist and lead vocalist for the award-winning local band Sophistafunk. His complex flows and insightful lyrical content have enabled Jack to spread his poetic Hip-Hop style.

The emcee for the event, Georgia Popoff, expresses herself through work as a community and performance poet, educator, editor and spoken word producer. Her work has been published in a variety of press, online sources and anthologies, including her own collection of poetry, Coaxing Nectar from Longing.

"Poetry and spoken word provide much needed inspiration for the work of creating a world based on peace and social justice. It can stir the heart in ways that typical political activism cannot," said SPC staffperson Andy Mager.

Interested Syracusans are invited to join in by reading their own work or that of others and/or to come listen and be inspired. Feel free to bring a lawn chair for comfort.

In the event of rain, the event will be held at the Pavilion, near the playground.

The program is free and followed by refreshments. For further information call 472-5478, see peacecouncil.net or email andy@peacecouncil.net.
