North Syracuse couple dazzles Cicero dance floor

Last minute contest entry leads to victory

Carmella and Fritz Rath, of North Syracuse, were enjoying the tunes of Ruby Shooz June 11 at the 18th Annual Cicero Community Festival.

However, their "just for fun" dancing attracted many compliments and encouragement to enter the festival's first ever dance contest that evening. While another contest was held June 12, many festival-goers were fixed on seeing them in the Friday night contest.

Despite a shoulder injury, Fritz gave in and signed up for the contest.

"I have lifts and bigger moves that we do," Fritz said. "But with my shoulder, I cannot lift my arm above my head."

No matter what the Raths thought was missing from their vault of swing moves, the crowd cheered and applauded their every move.

The couple competed against six other couples to claim $100 cash, an overnight stay in a Jacuzzi Suite at Comfort Suites in Cicero along with dinner for two at DG's Family Restaurant.

Fulton Savings Bank and Accurate Accounting sponsored the contest. Three runner-up couples were also chosen: Patti Gibeault and Tom Flynn, of Baldwinsville; Ed and Mary Henry, of Fayetteville, and Norma and Bruce Blanchard, of North Syracuse.
