North Area Meals on Wheels hopeful for $1,000 prize
He was surprised and now he's honored, said David France, a North Area Meals on Wheels volunteer of 10 years.
France, of North Syracuse, was recently nominated for the American Volunteer Meals on Wheels Association of America Award by a member of the national program's board of directors.
"National Meals on Wheels requests that we nominate a special volunteer," said Donna Barrett, NAMOW director of operations. "We would like to choose all of our volunteers so we have someone else select one volunteer. All of our volunteers are outstanding."
Last year, Fran Fedrizzi was the NAMOW nominee for this award.
Barrett said she was pleased to see France earn the nomination as he represents the entire group of volunteers' passion for people.
"This award is something the entire chapter will share," Barrett said.
If France is announced as the winner at the annual National Meals on Wheels Conference held Aug. 31 in Atlanta, Ga., NAMOW will receive $1,000 in funding. Second place receives $750 in funding and third place will receive $500 in funding.
Bridgestone Retail is a major sponsor of the award and will donate tires to winners for Meals on Wheels vans or other vehicles used for meal delivery.
"He's genuine in his mission and he is very compassionate with the seniors," Barrett said.
Videos of each Meals on Wheels nominee have been posted on mowaa.org where they will receive votes.
France is already encouraging friends and family to vote for him so that NAMOW will received the funding.
"It's great publicity for the North Area Meals on Wheels," France said. "That's what it's all about."
His passion for life and the people he visits and works with has come about since his family and friends have helped him through tough times.
