Baseball Warriors hang on, reach state final four again

All looked to be fine as McAvoy looked to finish a complete game in the top of the seventh - but it nearly fell apart.

McAvoy, after getting the first two outs, hit a batter and then gave up a single, prompting head coach Bob Weismore to insert Corey Hewitt in relief. But Hewitt echoed McAvoy's problems, plunking Jake Doolittle (the opposing pitcher) to make it 4-2 and then giving up two bases-loaded walks to cut the margin to one.

Now Mike McMullen, who had two hits and three stolen bases at the plate, was brought in with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second. Aaron Backo had the chance - but McMullen struck him out, and Westhill had survived.

On Saturday at 1 p.m., Westhill will face Tonawanda (Section V) in the state semifinals at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, hoping to advance to the title game which immediately follows at 4 p.m.
