Stars from Marcellus, West Genesee, Westhill and Solvay all found their way to the top during last Thursday's Section III track and field state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse's Bragman Stadium.
And by doing so, this large contingent will all go to Vestal High School, just west of Binghamton, for the state championship meet this Friday and Saturday.
Marcellus senior Mike Quercia had, by far, the fastest time in either division in the 800-meter run. He covered the distance in 1:51.78, a full 4.6 seconds ahead of the Division II (small school) runner-up, Tully's Ohure Sam. By contrast, Division I champion Colin Savage (Liverpool) won in 1:56.67.
In the Division II mile, Jesse Garn gave the Mustangs another title, his time of 4:20.88 nearly seven seconds clear of Holland Patent's Dylan Rach. And in the 4x800 relay, Quercia, Garn, Tom Riccardi and Ryan Manahan prevailed in 8:01.26, more than six seconds ahead of Cooperstown. Solvay was fourth in 8:24.94.
Marcellus swept both sides of the 4x800, taking the girls Division II race as Rachel Garn, Lizzy Dean, Maggie Dunn and Laura Quercia prevailed in 9:37.19, just ahead of Skaneateles (9:38.61) and the rest of the field.
Solvay's C.J. Brooks dominated the shot put. His throw of 53 feet 4 inches was the best in Section III this season and beat a stellar field that included Westhill's Tom Fisher, who was third with 47 feet 7 inches.
Fisher more than atoned for it, though, when he prevailed in the Division II discus with a heave of 136 feet 9 inches, with South Jefferson's Louis Kendall (133 feet) in second place.
Also for the Warriors, Kevin Zych, with a second-place time of 9:27.08 in the 3,200-meter run, qualified for the state meet, as did the 4x400 relay team as Ryan Brennan, Peter Clark, Jack Honis and Matt Trendowski finished second in 3:27.14.
