Beaver Lake: Canoeing and kayaking activities

The perfect outdoor activity for the whole family this spring and summer is canoeing or kayaking at Beaver Lake Nature Center. The Canoe/Kayak Dock will be open weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and visitors will be able explore the lake's edge in search of beaver lodges, turtles, herons and birds of prey. Canoe/kayak rentals will be available for $8 per hour and $2 for each additional half-hour.

Sonnnenberg Gardens

Beaver Lake Nature Center will lead a trip to Sonnenberg Gardens from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday June 10. Sonnenberg Gardens, which includes a beautiful Victorian mansion and gardens, is located at the north end of Canandaigua Lake, in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region. Participants will explore the mansion, visit the Finger Lakes Wine Center, stroll the grounds and walk through the many beautiful gardens. The price is $55 and includes transportation, admission and a gourmet lunch. Advance registration is required.

Weekend guided walks

Beaver Lake Nature Center invites everyone to come out, explore and discover the great outdoors during its naturalist led weekend guided walks. The outings offered at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday feature a different topic weekly. Summer topics include:

    June 5 and 6 - Looking for Butterflies

June 12 and 13 - Turtles

June 19 and 20 - Damselflies and Dragonflies

June 26 and 27 - Frogs

July 3 and 4 - Carnivorous Plants

July 10 and 11; 17 and 18 - Eye to Eye with a Red Tailed Hawk

July 24 and 25 - History of the Cool Hemlock Forest

July 31 and Aug. 1 - Identifying Ferns

Aug. 7 and 8 - Turtles

Aug. 14 and 15 - Waterbirds

Aug. 21 and 22 - Squirrels

Aug. 28 and 29 - Sweeping for Insects

This program is free with the $3 per vehicle admission.

Nature on Wheels

Beaver Lake Nature Center will offer Summer Wildflower Tours on their Nature on Wheels (NOW) Mobile, a nine-seat electric tram. Held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays in June and at 10:30 a.m. during July and August, the tours are geared to folks who have mobility limitations and feature a leisurely ride through the forest with stops to look at interesting points of nature. The tours are $2.50 per person and pre-registration is required.

Beaver Lake Nature Center is an Onondaga County Park located at 8477 East Mud Lake Road, four miles west of Baldwinsville off Route 370.
