Bhattacharya named LHS Senior of the Week

This week's Liverpool High School Senior of the Week for June 2, Prerana Bhattacharya, is the vice president of the Science Olympiad.

She was also the treasurer of the Science Olympiad during her junior year and a participant as a sophomore.

Bhattacharya has served as treasurer of the French Club for the last two years and a Math League participant for three years.

She is a member of Key Club and the National Honor Society. During her first two years at LHS, Bhattacharya participated in Dance Club, the Art Club and wrote for The Lifeguard, each for one year.

On the field, Bhattacharya enjoyed playing for the Seneca Girls Softball League during the summer of 2008 and 2009.

During her freshman year she was a part of the Eastern Singing Club at Our Lady of the Missions School in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Her volunteer work over the years has included time at the Liverpool Public Library, St. Joseph's Hospital and math tutoring.

Some of her awards include a commendation in the National Merit Scholarship Program, Student of the Month presented by the Liverpool Elks Lodge, Rensselaer Medal for Excellence in Science and Math and several Academic Excellence Awards in various school subjects.

While in Kolkata, Bhattacharya received an honorable mention in a story-telling competition presented by a renowned Indian newspaper, The Telegraph.

With her many accomplishments comes much thanks to her parents, Mamata and Prabal Bhattacharya, who have been her greatest influence, she said.

"My mom and dad have provided me with the love and support to grow into the person I am today. They've helped me whenever I need help and let me be when I needed to make my own mistakes," Prerana said. "My parents have made tough decisions and sacrifices for my brother and me, and I am so grateful to them for everything they've done for us."

After high school, Bhattacharya hopes to study chemistry or biochemistry in college.
