The Onondaga County All-Stars made it two in a row at the Senior Babe Ruth 16-18 Mid-Atlantic Regional with a 7-1 victory over Maryland Saturday at Marcellus High School.
Onondaga, the host team, scored five times in the first three innings against Maryland, picking up right where it left off offensively after a 12-1 win Thursday against Eastern NY. The eight-team tournament had the day off on Friday because of heavy rain.
Auburn's Steve Komanecky got the start for Onondaga and earned the win. He also helped his own cause with a solo homer. Komanecky pitched 4 2/3 innings and had four strikeouts on a hot and muggy day. Liverpool's Joe Riley came in relief of Komanecky and closed out the win.
The double-elimination tournament features teams from Eastern, Western and Metro New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Southern New Jersey.
Western and Eastern were eliminated on Saturday. The regional winner advances to the Senior Babe Ruth World Series on Aug. 4-12 in Newark, Ohio. The tournament championship is Monday at Alliance Bank Stadium.
Recent Fayetteville-Manlius graduate Dan Maloney hit a two-run single to left field in the first inning to get Onondaga on the board. Onondaga tacked on two more runs in the second on home runs by former Oswego star Adam McPherson (Finger Lake Community College) and Komanecky.
Auburn's Tim LoCastro had two hits while Westhill's Mike McMullen and Bishop Grimes' David Campese also finished with two hits including a double.
Onondaga can advance to the tournament championship round with a win Sunday against Northern New Jersey at Marcellus.
