Update: DeWitt Police charge tenant with setting fire

A tenant of Springfield Gardens Apartment Complex was arrested in connection with today's early morning fire at the Springfield Gardens Apartment Complex.

Markina L. Mason, 34, of 21 Caton Drive, Apartment 109B, was charged with arson in the second degree and criminal mischief in the second degree. She was held on $50,000 cash/bond bail after having been arraigned by DeWitt Justice David Gideon.

Mason was the only occupant of the apartment at the time of the fire and was able to get out of the building along with other tenants. However, she and another resident in the building were transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. Mason has already been released.

DeWitt Police Officer L. Andrews was also taken to the hospital where he was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

A previous fire occurred last year inside the same apartment on the evening of Dec. 21. Mason was the only person in the apartment on that occasion and there were no injuries reported. DeWitt Police and East Syracuse Fire personnel responded to that fire as well.

Today's fire remains under investigation by investigators from DeWitt Police and East Syracuse Fire departments as well as the District Attorney's office.

No further arrests are expected.
