Skaneateles girls hockey enters homestretch

On a Jan. 8-9 trip to the north country, Skaneateles escaped with back-to-back ties - 2-2 against Potsdam, then 1-1 against first-place Canton. In both games, Brown finished with 35 saves. Major, Bronk and Kalie Pidgeon scored.

Starting on Jan. 16, Skaneateles played five times in eight days, going 2-3 during that stretch.

In between a 5-1 conquest of St. Lawrence and a 1-0 squeaker against Saranac Lake, the Lakers lost three times - 1-0 to Potsdam, 3-2 to Oswego (in overtime) and 4-0 against Alexandria Bay.

The Saranac game ended that skid, and Skaneateles needed it. It was 0-0 until the third period, when Williams, amid a big scramble in front of the net, poked the puck into the net for the game's only goal.

What made this more remarkable was that, in the third period, Saranac out-shot the Lakers 16-4, but Brown turned them all away. For the season, she has a 1.67 goals against average and a .950 save percentage.
